Thomas W. Wakefield, M.D. is Emeritus Professor of Surgery, The University of Michigan. He is a 1975 honors graduate of The University of Toledo. He then received his MD from the Medical College of Ohio in 1978. He has been a vascular surgeon at the University of Michigan since 1986. He served as Head of the Section of Vascular Surgery and Director of the University of Michigan Cardiovascular Center. He is past president of the American Venous Forum, Michigan Vascular Society, and the Frederick A. Coller Surgical Society. He had an active clinical practice in all aspects of vascular surgery, focusing on venous and coagulation disorders until his retirement in 2023. His research focus was and continues to be on the role of inflammation in thrombosis, with a focus on VTE. He currently serves as a national trustee on the University of Toledo Board of Trustees and is a trustee on the University of Toledo Foundation.
