Dr. Harold J. Welch, Division of Vascular Surgery at Lahey Hospital and Medical Center, received his undergraduate degree from Tufts University, and then attended Albany Medical College in Albany, New York, his hometown, on a Navy Scholarship. He did a surgical internship at the Oakland, California, Naval Hospital, then went to Tufts-New England Medical Center in Boston for his General Surgery Residency. After residency, he spent two years in the Navy as a General Surgeon, in Iceland, and Groton, Connecticut. In 1990, he returned to Tufts-New England Medical Center for his Vascular Surgery Fellowship, then spent two more years in the Navy paying off his scholarship debt, as the sole vascular surgeon at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia. From there, he returned to Tufts-New England Medical Center, on the staff for three years, before joining the Vascular Surgery Department at the Lahey Clinic. He spent 24 years at Lahey and then joined the Vascular Care Group in Hyannis on Cape Cod for 18 months, before returning to Lahey as Interim Chair of Vascular Surgery. He has authored or coauthored 48 chapters or articles, is a registered vascular technologist, and directed 3 vascular laboratories. He was the Program Director for the General Surgery Residency program at Lahey for 11 years and served as the Chair of the GME Committee at Lahey for 8 years. He received the teaching award from the surgery residents in 2002 and 2009, and was the recipient of the Sigvaris Traveling Fellowship in Venous Disease from the American Venous Forum in 2000. He a Past-President of the American Venous Forum.
